Chennai: An emergency consultative meeting of Members of parliament from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) began under the leadership of tamil Nadu chief minister M. K. Stalin.

Strong Opposition to Delimitation Move

During the meeting, chief minister Stalin strongly criticized the Union government, led by the bharatiya janata party (BJP), over its reported move to carry out a delimitation exercise.

He described the attempt as a “blatant anti-democratic act”, alleging that rushing such a significant political process without proper consultation undermines the principles of democracy.

What is Delimitation?

Delimitation refers to the process of redrawing the boundaries of parliamentary and assembly constituencies based on changes in population. It is typically carried out to ensure fair representation for citizens across regions.

Concerns Raised by DMK

Stalin expressed concern that conducting delimitation hastily could:

Disturb the balance of representation among states

Penalize states that have effectively controlled population growth

Create political and regional inequalities

He emphasized that such a crucial exercise should be carried out with transparency, consensus, and fairness.

Emergency Meeting of DMK MPs

The emergency meeting was convened to:

Discuss the potential implications of delimitation

Formulate a united political response

Strategize future actions in Parliament

DMK MPs are expected to raise this issue strongly in upcoming parliamentary sessions.

Call for Democratic Process

Chief minister Stalin urged the Union government to:

Avoid unilateral decisions

Engage with all stakeholders

Respect the federal structure of India

He reiterated that any decision affecting representation must uphold democratic values and protect the interests of all states.
