Famous malayalam film director and cinematographer Shaji N. Karun has passed away. He was 73. He passed away at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram. Shaji N. Karun, who identified malayalam cinema at the national and international levels, was born in 1952. He studied at Pallikkara school and thiruvananthapuram University College. Later, he joined the pune Film college and received a diploma in cinematography in 1975. Development Corporation as a film officer. It was during this period that he worked with the famous director G. Aravindan. He continued to work with leading directors like K.G. George and M.D. Vasudevan Nair. Shaji, who has done cinematography for more than 40 films, has given malayalam many artistic films like Paravi, Swapanam, Swam, Vanaprastam, Nishad, Kutty Srang, A.K.G.
He has received state and national awards for best cinematography. His first film Paravi won several international awards, including the Golden Camera Award at the Cannes Film Festival. The malayalam film that has received the most international awards is Paravi. The film Swam was the first malayalam film to be screened in the main section of the Cannes Film Festival. He served as the president of the kerala State Film Academy and the president of the international Film festival of kerala (IFFK). He was awarded the padma shri in 2011. The kerala government honored Shaji N. Karunain with the J.C. Daniel Award for his outstanding contribution to malayalam cinema. He has done cinematography for Aravindan films like Kanchanaseetha, Thumb, Gummati, Esthappan, Pokuvayil, Chidambaram, and Oridham. He has won the National Award for Best Cinematography and three state awards.


Shaji N. Karun was also a talented genius who had no shortage of controversies. Despite receiving National Awards, he clashed with the Film Academy for not getting recognition in the state. When Kutty Srangku did not get state awards, he protested publicly. He took revenge by winning five National Awards. There was a clash with K.R. Mohanan, who was the president of the Academy. Like most artists, he traveled with leftist policies. His demise has caused great sadness among the malayalam film industry.
