Mozilla Survey: people Losing Control Over Private Data

A new survey by Mozilla reveals alarming findings about people's concerns over their online privacy. The study, part of Mozilla's "Open What You Want" campaign, surveyed 8,000 adults across the US, UK, France, and Germany.

Lack of Control Over Online Privacy

84% of respondents feel they have no control over their online data and privacy.

21% of people in germany reported feeling more optimistic, believing they have some control.

A worrying 24% of people said it’s "too late" to regain control, feeling that Big Tech companies already have too much of their personal information to change anything.

Anger and Frustration Towards Big Tech

47% of people expressed anger at being tracked without consent by Big Tech companies.

38% are upset that their personal data is being used to train AI systems without their permission.

36% of respondents, particularly in the US and UK, are frustrated by how much companies know about them.

Complicated Data Settings

Users often find it difficult to adjust privacy settings due to confusing default settings in browsers.

Many people do not know how to control their privacy, even if they want to, due to complex settings designed by companies.

Mozilla’s Response and Vision

Ajit Verma, VP of Product at Firefox, emphasized that technology should prioritize humanity over profit.

Christina Lang, VP of Global Marketing at Mozilla, stressed that Mozilla aims to help users regain control of their data and protect their privacy from large corporations.

Shift in Perspective on Data Privacy

Many users now view not sharing data as their greatest weapon to preserve their freedom.

The survey highlights how the current structure of the internet is eroding user trust and making privacy concerns more urgent than ever.
