The Final Reckoning almost included a post-credits scene, director Christopher McQuarrie disclosed in an interview with USA Today.  He revealed that a "coda" was to be filmed for the picture.  However, the action star determined that the sequence marked the end of the film and canceled the post-credits scene shot when he showed Cruise the final ten minutes of the eighth chapter.  This occurred in the middle of the production process.

He said, "I came to tom and I said, Look, normally I would want you to see the whole movie before I showed this to you, but we're about to shoot this coda in a couple of days and just look at this bit. He said, ‘You know what, you can cancel Saturday's work because this is the end of the movie. This is it.’ I’m not going to say because it could end up in another movie."

Although there was no post-credits sequence in The Final Reckoning, McQuarrie's recent disclosure raises questions about what might have been.  As the eighth episode comes to a close, Grace gives Ethan the gadget that traps the Entity, and he hides in the shadows. Since it has been promoted throughout the film's pre-release publicity, this is effectively being considered the farewell to Cruise and his iconic character.

Even though The Final Reckoning is regarded as Cruise's last film, there are doubts as to whether this will ultimately be the case.  Many of his Mission: Impossible co-stars were sure that Cruise would return as Ethan in the end, even though he has stated that this is the last one for the franchise.  Since many viewers and commentators don't think Mission: Impossible will end, this sentiment has even spread to them.
