Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is still expected to be a box office success for Paramount, regardless of whether movie reaches the lofty heights of Lilo & Stitch during Memorial Day Weekend.  This is due to the fact that franchise durability and multi-platform revenue are more important to studios than bragging rights for opening weekends.  What does this opening weekend indicate, then? Let's dissect it.

How Will 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning' Make Money?
Here's the thing:  Mission: Impossible is more than just a popular film franchise.  It is a giant of legacy media.  Interest in the earlier entries is rekindled each time a new movie is released.  As a result, there is a surge in streaming views, wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital sales, and catalogue license agreements.  Nearly thirty years after its premiere, the 1996 original Mission: Impossible still brings in roughly $10 million annually for Paramount, according to industry sources and a report by Deadline.  Yes, that classic paranoid thriller featuring the exploding chewing gum and the CIA vault break-in is making a ton of money.

That is the allure of creating a massive franchise with a well-known figure.  It implies that every new film increases the value of the entire IP and encourages more people to watch the earlier films. But let's face it, will this be the last one?  Additionally, the halo effect is already beginning to take effect because Final Reckoning has been the top-billed movie at IMAX for three weeks in a row.  Not to mention that Paramount wasn't the only one who had to pay for it.  Paramount's risk was greatly decreased by Skydance Media, who paid for a portion of the expenses, and New Republic Pictures, which contributed a percentage.  The picture has a long, maybe multi-decade, tail ahead of it, even if it takes a time for its enormous budget to be recovered in box office receipts.

As part of its premium action roster, Paramount+ has been actively marketing the Mission franchise.  Prior entries have seen a sharp increase in viewership, and Final Reckoning is anticipated to have a long run on the site, increasing engagement and subscriptions, particularly when it launches on streaming later this year.  Even if The Final Reckoning doesn't exactly break even in cinemas, it will be a hit for decades to come because it is receiving high marks from critics (80% Certified Fresh) and viewers (93% favorable on PostTrak), earning a strong A- CinemaScore.
