With its anticipated opening weekend haul of $90 million to $145 million in North America next month, Superman finally hit the box office yesterday night after three weeks of release. Given the hype around the project, it's difficult to imagine the first DCU film earning less than $100 million, but most analysts anticipate it to launch on the lower end of that spectrum. Thankfully, The Wrap has some positive news to share today.

The trade claims that $10 million has already been made by Superman from ticket presales.  The actors and director james Gunn are presently touring the world to generate excitement, and as July 11 draws nearer, the promotion should pick up even more speed.

For comparison, in 2022, The Batman made $7.7 million in presales before opening to $134 million.  According to james Gunn, he just wants to break even as an executive at DC Studios.  It remains to be seen if Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will find that sufficient.

"So the balance isn't between creative and business," Gunn said in response to an Entertainment Weekly question about how he manages his roles as a studio boss and a director.  There is equilibrium between macro and specialized creativity.  All of our meetings and business-related tasks are handled by Peter Safran.  Writing and directing are important to me, but so is mentoring other authors and filmmakers.

"It involves trying to think of new concepts for other television programs and motion pictures that I assign to other authors.  Thus, my work is entirely creative," he added.  "Occasionally, there are other things that you need to do, of course, as any writer/director does, but mostly it's taking care of the creative storytelling across all platforms."

However, there are situations when it's a bit excessive.  I'm not able to do everything.  As part of my learning process during the last two years of this employment, I've had to try to concentrate on what I can concentrate on.  I need to really concentrate on some aspects of what's going on because if I try to do everything, it's too little of any one thing," Gunn said.
