The madras high court on january 20, 2026, resumed hearing in the Jana Nayagan case involving actor Thalapathy Vijay.

The court reserved its order on an appeal filed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) against a single judge’s directive to grant certification to the film.

The matter was heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan.

Appeal Against Single Judge’s Order

Earlier, on january 9, Justice PT Asha ruled in favour of the filmmakers.

The single judge directed the CBFC to forthwith grant a U/A certificate to Jana Nayagan.

On the same day, the CBFC challenged this order by filing a writ appeal.

Subsequently, the division bench stayed the single judge’s direction, putting the film’s release on hold.

Supreme Court’s Direction

Following the stay, the film’s producers approached the supreme court seeking relief.

The apex court declined to entertain the plea.

It directed the producers to approach the madras high court division bench instead.

The supreme court also instructed that the matter be heard on january 20, leading to the current hearing.

Court’s Observations During Hearing

Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan appeared on behalf of the CBFC.

Senior advocate Satish Parasaran represented KVN Productions, the film’s producers.

The high court observed that financial investment alone cannot be a ground for relief.

The bench stated that citing a ₹500 crore investment and release date pressure was insufficient.

It noted that the single judge had failed to examine the issue in adequate depth.

The court remarked that the CBFC should have been given a minimum time to file a counter.

Producer’s Timeline on Certification Delay

Producer venkat K Narayana released a video explaining the delay.

The film was submitted to the CBFC on december 18, 2025.

On december 22, the CBFC indicated a U/A 16+ certificate, subject to changes.

After incorporating changes, the film was resubmitted.

On january 5, 2026, the film was unexpectedly referred to a revising committee following a complaint.

Producer Reacts Emotionally

Venkat Narayana described the situation as extremely emotional and distressing.

He said the team believed Thalapathy Vijay deserved a fitting farewell after decades of fan support.

After hearing both sides, the madras high court reserved its final order on the CBFC appeal.
