Movies, whether from the malayalam or telugu film industries, have long been lumped together as part of the larger South cinema industry, with little distinction between them. Despite being highly different from one another, there is frequently misconception about the abundance of films created in the South. On a similar topic, kamal haasan once spoke at length on the dark period in the malayalam cinema business.
 
Let's go back in time to when some of the most well-known figures in the telugu, tamil, and malayalam cinema industries, including kamal haasan, SS Rajamouli, and others, gathered under one roof to discuss the matter.  In a candid round table discussion in 2022, kamal haasan, prithviraj Sukumaran, SS Rajamouli, lokesh kanagaraj, swapna Dutt, and gautham Vasudev menon discussed different facets of their respective businesses.
 
Speaking along the same lines, Haasan stated, "Let me tell you about the dark moment that transpired in kerala when I used to mostly keep yelling since I am a huge admirer and trained in malayalam cinema.I told myself, "You must be ashamed; what has happened to my malayalam cinema?" That type of OG thing was because they tried to compete with telugu and tamil film, but they (Mollywood) lost their grit. "Now you can probably blame it on OTT or censors returning."
