Actor janhvi kapoor spoke out against the "voyeuristic nature" of media and social media, highlighting its role in dehumanising even death.
Her comments came at the We The women 2025 event on Sunday, where she addressed the increasing moral decline in journalism and online platforms.
Personal Experience of Loss
Janhvi reflected on losing her mother, renowned actor Sridevi, on february 24, 2018, at age 54.
She described the experience as extremely painful, compounded by media and social media turning her grief into a meme.
Janhvi explained she avoids publicly discussing her mother’s death to prevent appearing as if she is seeking headlines.
“The feeling I went through is something I’ll never be able to verbalise… I refrain because everyone just wants a headline,” she said.
Criticism of media and Social Media
Janhvi stated that media and social media have contributed to the complete derailment of human morality.
She cited the false reports of veteran actor Dharmendra’s death on november 11, 2025, who actually passed away on november 24 at age 89, as a recent example.
According to her, such incidents are increasingly common and highlight the voyeuristic tendencies encouraged by online platforms.
Celebrities’ Role in the Problem
Janhvi acknowledged that celebrities are also part of the problem by sharing videos, headlines, and content that drive engagement through views, likes, and comments.
She emphasised that this culture incentivises sensationalism, which feeds voyeuristic habits and moral degradation.
Moral and Social Reflection
Janhvi lamented that human morality is in shambles due to excessive curiosity about tragic events.
She said people have lost consciousness and restraint, indulging in practices that are disgusting and dehumanising.
Social media has normalized voyeurism, giving people a perverse sense of satisfaction from gossip and tragedy.
