In modern Hyderabad, the expansive racecourse at Malakpet which is spread for more than 100 acres is an iconic landmark. Over many decades, many race enthusiasts have been taking part in the many events and it has held the Hyderabadi culture high. According to historians, it was exclusively built for the British by the Nizam of Hyderabad for royal recreation and it has been witness to historic events of twin cities as a landmark monument. But now a dark shadow has fallen upon it. TRS has already pledged in its manifesto that the race course at Malakpet would be shut down and it would be made an educational hub catering to Telangana students right from KG to PG with a mega complex. Heritage activists are already outraged over this proposal and are all set to sound a war cry regarding the taking over of such an expansive set of land in the heart of the city! Insiders say the educational hub is just an eyewash and it would be catering more to the business needs of few political leaders.
