The madras high court has directed the Commissioner of Liquor Prohibition and Regulation Department to submit a report within two weeks on whether clubs and hotels are following the liquor license conditions. In a public interest petition filed by lawyer Suresh Babu in the madras high court, "According to the tamil Nadu Liquor Licensing Rules, it is stipulated that clubs and hotels licensed to sell liquor must sell liquor only from 11 AM to 11 PM.

In violation of these conditions, liquor is served in many clubs and hotels beyond the permitted hours. Alcoholic beverages are also served in clubs to non-members. Liquor is served in clubs and hotels beyond the permitted hours till 3 am. No action has been taken so far despite filing a complaint in this regard.

The petition demanded that the tamil Nadu Liquor Prohibition and Prohibition Commissioner be directed to conduct surprise inspections at hotels of these licensed clubs and take action against violators. The petition came up for hearing before a bench comprising Justices Bhujahendi and lakshmi Narayanan. At that time, the government said, "District Collectors have been instructed to investigate whether the clubs and hotels are operating as per license conditions."

Subsequently, the judges hearing the case directed the Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise Department to submit a report within two weeks on whether the license conditions are being followed in the clubs and hotels and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
