M. Sunitha Rao, president of the telangana Mahila congress, criticised the governing bjp on thursday for its silence about Brij bhushan Sharan Singh, a bjp mp and the head of the Wrestling Foundation of India, who has been accused of abusing female wrestlers. In a news conference held here, the congress leader accused the home minister amit shah and prime minister Narendra Modi of shielding the bjp MP. She noted that the Mahila congress has supported women in the past and was still speaking out in support of the female wrestlers.

She demanded Brij bhushan Sharan Singh's resignation and stern legal action against him, claiming that crime rates have increased in BJP-ruled states and that the majority of offenders are members of the ruling party. Rao questioned Modi's silence about the treatment of the wrestlers on the day of the new parliament building's opening.

Vijender Singh, a congress lawmaker and Olympic medalist, had already criticised people opposing the wrestlers' protest, claiming they were unaware of the challenges involved in becoming an Olympic champion. The police on sunday forcibly removed the wrestlers from the protest venue when they attempted to march to the newly inaugurated parliament building while they had been calling for the arrest of the WFI president since april 23. They were taken into custody and eventually freed.

The WFI president is the subject of two FIRs from the delhi Police. The first alleges that the young wrestler violated the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while the second accuses him of insulting modesty.
