Chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on saturday officially opened the massive palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme, ushering in a new stage in the transformation of southern Telangana, one of the most underdeveloped areas in the nation. He turned on one of the powerful 145-MW pumping systems, the first of its kind ever utilised in the world, and started its essential wet run, realising the long-cherished dream of the residents of the water-scarce region.

A massive tunnel system, surge pool, and more over 3,200 cusecs of water were pushed into the Anjanagiri reservoir developed as part of the Stage-1 of the Rs 35,000 crore project from the offshore point of the srisailam project. Large crowds that had gathered at the project broke out in cheers. Slogans fill the air praising the chief minister for his dedication to the cause of palamuru, which earlier saw thousands of residents flee in search of water and a way of life in the undivided State.

The project, which was constructed in five stages with six reservoirs, aims to provide 7.15 tmc of water in the first phase to support the drinking water supply in more than 1220 villages dispersed over six districts. It includes a clause that states all necessary clearances must be obtained before using 73 tmc of water to fulfil irrigation needs in the second phase.

The chief minister did a special pooja at the location and erected the pylon commemorating the momentous occasion after arriving at Narlapur earlier in the day in a big column of cars. He was given a hearty welcome by a large number of his cabinet colleagues, elected officials, and gramme panchayat sarpanches from the beneficiary villages. He was updated by the project officials on the progress of the surge pools and pump houses in four additional sections of the project. He placed a seedling there as a sign that palamuru was about to embark on a green revolution.
