The RBI has directed that bank customers will withdraw unclaimed money deposited in 30 banks. On september 28, 2023, RBI informed that the portal has provided information related to 30 banks. It covers approximately 90 percent of unclaimed deposits in the Depositor education and Awareness (DEA) Fund. It helps people identify and claim unclaimed amounts. RBI launched the Utgam portal on 17 August.
Its aim is to provide people with the facility to find unclaimed deposits across multiple banks at one place. Initially the facility was launched with seven banks. At that time, RBI had informed that more banks will be included in it by october 15.
On september 28, 2023, RBI informed that the facility of information related to 30 banks has been made available on the portal. It covers approximately 90 percent of unclaimed deposits in the Depositor education and Awareness (DEA) Fund. The 30 banks include all major public sector banks such as bank of india-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>state bank of india (SBI), bank of Baroda (BOB), punjab National bank (PNB), Canara bank and bank of India.
Apart from this, foreign banks like Citibank, Standard Chartered and HSBC and private sector banks include hdfc bank, icici bank and Axis Bank. This portal is designed to monitor unclaimed balances/accounts, claim deposits or activate their deposit accounts with respective banks.
It is to be noted that by february 2023, public sector banks have transferred around Rs 35,000 crore of unclaimed deposits to RBI. These are accounts where no transactions have taken place for the last 10 years or more. sbi has the highest unclaimed amount of Rs 8,086 crore.
After this, punjab National bank has Rs 5,340 crore, Canara bank Rs 4,558 crore and bank of Baroda Rs 3,904 crore. As per the rules, if there is no claim for the amount deposited in the bank for 10 years, it will be transferred to the RBI's 'Depositor education and Awareness' fund.
