Usually for quite some time now, there have been murmurs about the world’s billionaires building apocalypse-proof bunkers that can withstand natural disasters and or a civil disorder. On Thursday, Wired magazine published an investigative article that reported the scale and construction of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s 1,400-acre Hawaii compound named Koolau Ranch. The investigation, which gathered information from local sources involved with the project and planning documents gathered through public records requests, estimated that the total worth of Koolau Ranch amounts to $270 million after accounting for construction and land purchase. This is a conservative estimate, meaning that the real price can be much higher.
The expansive Koolau Ranch property comprises a “dozen buildings with at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms in total.” Zuckerberg’s underground bunker covers an area of 5,000 square feet. This bunker is self-sufficient with its independent energy, food, and water supply. Wired reported that people working on the project, be it the carpenters, security guards, or electricians, are bound by a strict nondisclosure agreement to not discuss any details about the construction with anyone. Zuckerberg’s not the only billionaire who has invested in some type of doomsday-proof property.
As per a 2017 New Yorker article, titled, “Doomsday Prep for the Super-Rich”, several billionaires and tech titans have built bunkers or safe houses that might provide them safety from hypothetical scenarios where there is a collapse of civilization. Reddit founder and CEO Steve Huffman told the New Yorker that he got laser eye surgery in an attempt to prepare for doomsday. He admitted, “If the world ends and not even if the world ends, but if we have trouble getting contacts or glasses is going to be a huge pain.” The 40-year-old entrepreneur also detailed his preparation for the doomsday and said, “I own a couple of motorcycles. I have a bunch of guns and ammo. Food. I figure that, with that, I can hole up in my house for some amount of time.”
