Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin has written a strong letter to the Union Minister, urging the central government to take immediate and effective diplomatic measures to prevent the continued arrest and detention of tamil Nadu fishermen by neighboring countries.
In his letter, the chief minister expressed deep concern over the recurring incidents in which tamil Nadu fishermen are being arrested, harassed, and imprisoned while carrying out their traditional fishing activities. He pointed out that despite repeated appeals and assurances, such incidents continue to occur, causing severe distress to fishermen and their families.
Fishermen Face Repeated Hardships
The chief minister highlighted that fishermen from coastal districts such as Rameswaram, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, and Ramanathapuram depend entirely on fishing for their livelihood. When fishermen are arrested and boats are seized, families are left without income, pushing them into financial and emotional crisis.
He stressed that many fishermen unknowingly cross maritime boundaries due to inadequate navigational facilities, poor weather conditions, or traditional fishing routes that have been followed for generations. Arresting them and subjecting them to harsh treatment is inhumane, he said.
Demand for Diplomatic Intervention
Chief minister stalin urged the Union government to engage in strong diplomatic dialogue with the concerned neighboring country to ensure:
- Immediate release of arrested fishermen
- Return of seized fishing boats
- Assurance that fishermen are treated in a humane manner
- A permanent solution to prevent such incidents in the future
He emphasized that repeated arrests undermine trust and affect the safety and dignity of indian fishermen, calling for sustained diplomatic engagement rather than temporary relief.
Need for Long-Term Solutions
The chief minister also called for:
- Installation of advanced navigation and tracking systems in fishing boats
- Regular bilateral talks between the two nations
- Joint mechanisms to handle accidental border crossings
- Increased coastal awareness programs for fishermen
Conclusion
Concluding his letter, chief minister M.K. stalin reiterated that protecting the lives and livelihoods of tamil Nadu fishermen is a top priority for the state government. He appealed to the Union government to act swiftly and decisively, using diplomatic channels to ensure that tamil Nadu fishermen can pursue their livelihood without fear of arrest or persecution.
