Jallikattu game was used by women in ancient times to select their husbands. The women chose as their grooms the warriors who tamed the cow and won. Later Challikachu, gold coins, silver coins are given as gifts and now car bikes are given as gifts. Originally this game was called Challikattu. In ancient times, coins called salli were tied to the horns of cows. The warrior who tames that cow will be rewarded with those coins. Then with time warts have changed to Jallikattu.


Types of Jallikattu:


The game of Jallikattu is played in many forms. Vadivasal Jallikattu, Manjuvirattu and Vadam Jallikattu are popular.


Wadivasal Jallikattu:


The bull is released through a gate called Vadivasal. Then only one player has to catch the bull and go a certain distance. If so, that means the player has won. If no one can catch the bull then the bull has won. This type of Jallikattu is held in Madurai, Pudukottai, Theni, Thanjavur, Salem.


Veli Manju Viratu:


This type of Manchuviratu is held in Madurai, Manamadurai and Sivagangai districts. A bull is untethered in an open field. A bull can run in any direction it wants. Players have to suppress it.


Vadam Manchu Viratu:


Vadam means rope. The bull is tied with a rope 49 feet long and tied to a pole in the middle of the ground. A maximum of 49 feet can be circled. Players have to go inside the circle and tame the cow. A team of 7 or 8 people should tame the bull within 30 minutes.


Generally, Kangeyam bulls and Pulikulam bulls are mostly used in these Jallikattu competitions. Pulikulam bulls are considered more aggressive than Gangeum bulls. Apart from these, Theni mountain cow, Barkur mountain cow, Alambadi mountain cow are also used in jallikattu competitions.
