The gujarat assembly on wednesday (February 7) unanimously passed a resolution requesting the state's bharatiya janata party (BJP)-led government to take necessary steps for effective implementation of the education department's recent decision to teach Bhagavad Gita in schools. While the aam aadmi party (AAP) welcomed the motion and extended its support, congress members initially registered their opposition but later supported it during voting, following which the government's motion was passed unanimously in the House. .

In december last year, the state education department had announced that the ideals and values of the Bhagavad Gita would be taught in schools from classes VI to 12 from the next academic year. This proposal was presented in the house by minister of State for education Prafulla Pansheriya. Pansheriya said that the National education Policy 2020 emphasizes on instilling a sense of pride and connectedness among the students towards the rich and diverse culture and knowledge systems and traditions of India.

'We have brought this proposal to hide our failures'

Pansheriya said that from class 6th to 8th, it will be presented as a story and lesson in the textbook of holistic learning subject. He said that the teachings of Bhagavad Gita in the form of stories and lessons will be included in the first language curriculum from classes 9 to 12. On the proposal, congress MLA Kirit patel alleged that the BJP-led government has brought this proposal to hide its failures. congress legislature party leader amit Chavda said that his party is against this proposal because the BJP-led government has brought it to gain publicity.
