Alternative dam for Mullai Periyar

Saying that the Mullai Periyar dam is not safe, the kerala government has planned to build a new dam in Periyar village, Peermedu taluk, kerala state as an alternative. This place is at a distance of 8 km from Vandipperiyar. The kerala government is planning to build a new dam 1200 feet downstream from the existing dam. The tamil Nadu government is strongly opposed to this. If the kerala government builds a new dam, the Mullai Periyar dam, which is the main source of water in tamil Nadu, will run out of control and agriculture in the southern district will be completely affected.

In this case, the Department of Water Resources, government of kerala had applied to the Environmental Expert Appraisal Committee of the Union government on 05.02.2024 seeking the boundaries of the study for the Environmental Impact Statement for the construction of a new dam below Mullai Periyar Dam. This application was listed by the Central Environmental Expert Appraisal Committee for consideration today on May 28. After this information was published, political parties protested strongly. chief minister Stalin also wrote a letter to the central government.

In his letter, the chief minister had mentioned that the current process of preparation of Environmental Impact Report by the kerala Irrigation Design and Research Board and the process taken by the Environmental Expert Assessment Committee of the Union government is certainly an act of contempt of the supreme court orders.

And, therefore, in the agenda for the Environmental Expert Appraisal Committee meeting to be held on 28-5-2024, he requested to remove the discussion item regarding approval for preparation of Environmental Impact Statement for construction of new dam at Mulla Periyar and not to consider any such concept of government of kerala in future.
