
Formalities for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) will be completed today (Friday, 25 April). With the completion of the process, bjp will capture both the important posts after about two years. After the victory in the delhi Assembly elections, bjp is excited to capture the post of Mayor.
bjp has fielded raja Iqbal Singh for the post of Mayor in this election. At the same time, aam aadmi party (AAP) has not fielded candidates.
bjp has fielded jai Bhagwan Yadav from Begumpur ward for the post of Deputy Mayor. However, congress, which is lagging far behind in the number game, has entered the fray. The party's Mandeep Singh (Nangloi, Ward 47) and Ariba Khan (Abul Fazal Enclave, Ward 188) filed nominations for Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The MCD currently has 238 councillors. 12 seats are vacant due to some councillors being elected to the delhi Assembly and one to the Lok Sabha. The bjp has 117 councillors, up from 104 in 2022. The number of AAP has come down to 113 from the earlier 134. congress has only eight seats.
The electoral college for the mayoral election consists of 238 councillors, 10 MPs (seven from lok sabha and three from Rajya Sabha) and 14 MLAs. delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has named 11 bjp and 3 AAP MLAs as electors. In the last mayoral election held on november 14, 2024, Mahesh Kumar Khinchi of AAP won by a narrow margin of just three votes. According to the meeting guidelines issued by the MCD, all municipal councillors and members will have to bring their identity cards along as entry into the meeting hall will be allowed only after identity verification. No voter will be allowed to carry mobile phones or other electronic devices to the polling booth.
