Chhatrapati shivaji Maharaj’s Historic Visit to Aurangabad

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati shivaji Maharaj, the nation remembers his remarkable visit to aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar).

The visit took place in april 1666, eight years before his coronation, during his journey to Agra.

At that time, aurangabad was the capital of the Deccan province under the Mughal Empire and was named after Emperor Aurangzeb.

Although the region was not part of Hindavi Swarajya, it holds a significant place in maratha history due to shivaji Maharaj’s stay there.

Massive Crowd Gathered to See the maratha King

Historical records mention that a huge crowd gathered in aurangabad to catch a glimpse of shivaji Maharaj.

His growing reputation, military success, and leadership had already made him a widely admired figure.

The enthusiastic public turnout reflected his increasing influence and prestige, even in Mughal-controlled territory.

His presence in the city created excitement and curiosity among citizens and officials alike.

Mention in “Tarikh-e-Dilkusha”

Mughal administrative officer Bhimsen Saxena described this visit in his autobiography, Tarikh-e-Dilkusha.

The book was later translated into english by noted historian Jadunath Sarkar.

The memoir details shivaji Maharaj’s cavalry, his disciplined army, and the public admiration he received.

Visit After the Treaty of Purandar

The visit occurred after the Treaty of Purandar, signed between shivaji Maharaj and Mughal general mirza Raja jai Singh.

As per the treaty, shivaji Maharaj agreed to travel to agra to meet Emperor Aurangzeb.

During his stay in aurangabad, he was accompanied by around 500 well-armed soldiers.

His entourage included a gold and silver-studded palanquin, two elephants, camels carrying luggage, and a saffron flag adorned with golden decorations.

Personality and Royal Dignity

Historical descriptions portray shivaji Maharaj as slender, fair-skinned, and possessing an impressive personality.

His nine-year-old son, Sambhaji Maharaj, who accompanied him, was also noted for his charm.

An incident recorded by Bhimsen Saxena mentions that Mughal official Saif Shikan Khan did not personally receive shivaji Maharaj, which angered him.

Shivaji Maharaj reportedly questioned Khan’s absence, asserting his royal dignity.

Eventually, proper courtesies were extended before shivaji Maharaj proceeded on his historic journey to Agra.
