The recent conflict between the superpower America and russia has taken a unique turn with the seizure of a luxury ship, the 'Amadea,' owned by Russian tycoon Suleiman Kerimov. This move is part of the sanctions imposed by the US on Russian leaders, officials, military officers, and individuals associated with the Russian government following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The 348-feet long ship, Amadea, owned by Kerimov, was seized by US task force officers in 2022 when it was in Fiji. The ship is currently docked off the coast of San Diego. Kerimov, known for his close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, is accused of violating sanctions and utilizing the US banking system to fund the vessel's operating expenses.
The US federal prosecutors have sought permission from the judge to sell the ship due to its substantial maintenance costs. The prosecution claims that around $20 million has already been spent on the vessel's maintenance, with an average monthly expense of $600,000 for upkeep and an additional $140,000 for insurance. The total cost, including other expenses, is estimated at $1.78 lakh dollars. The US Marshals service values the ship at $230 million.
A surprising twist has occurred, as another company has contested the ownership of the vessel, claiming it belongs to them and not Kerimov. This company has filed a petition in court opposing the sale and has requested a stay on the proceedings pending a decision on their plea to drop the civil forfeiture investigation.
The company has also committed to reimbursing the US for the maintenance costs incurred so far if the ship is returned to them. This legal dispute adds a layer of complexity to the situation, emphasizing the intricate consequences of international sanctions and their impact on individuals and their assets.
