India's famous dam builder and world-renowned civil engineer Sir M Visvesvaraya's birthday is celebrated on september 15 as Engineers Day in India. On the occasion of his 161st birthday, we bring you some facts about the great engineer that you can share. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was awarded the Bharat Ratna Award, the country's highest civilian award, for his services to the nation. He is also known as Sir MV and the father of Modern Mysore. Here are some interesting facts about his birth anniversary.
10 Facts About Sir M Visvesvaraya:
 1. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on september 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village, Karnataka. At the age of 15, he lost his father, a sanskrit scholar.
2. He completed his early education at Chikkaballapur. Later he moved to Bangalore for his higher studies. Visvesvaraya studied engineering at Science college in pune and secured the first rank in LCE. F.C.E. Examinations were written in 1883.
3. bombay government gave him the job of Assistant engineer in Nashik. As an engineer, he has successfully implemented various projects. He was the master brain behind the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in Mysore.
4. Patented irrigation system with water flood gates at khadakwasla reservoir near Pune. This was done in 1903 to increase the level of food supply and storage to the highest levels known as the 'Block System'.
5. In 1912, the Maharaja of mysore became the Diwan. Visvesvaraya was appointed. He worked tirelessly for the comprehensive development of the state.
6. During his tenure as Diwan, industries like sandal oil factories, soap factories, metals factories, and chrome tanning factories were set up. Later they merged and established several industries like Bhadravati iron and Steel Works.
7. In 1917, Visvesvaraya helped establish the government Engineering college in Bangalore. Later Visvesvaraya college of Engineering was named in his honor.
8. In 1915, Visvesvaraya was knighted as a commander of the Order of the indian Empire (KCIE) by the british for his work and contribution to society.
9. In 1955, the government of india honored him with India's highest honor 'Bharat Ratna' for his continuous efforts in the fields of engineering and education.
10. He also earned the title of "Father of Modern mysore State". He died in 1962.
In 1903 automatic weir water flood gates were installed at Khadak Vasta Reservoir near pune in Maharashtra. All this was designed by him. He also got a patent right for this. He got a chance to store the flood water without any damage to the dam he built. As the experiment was successful there, similar gates were also installed near Tigra Dam in gwalior and krishna raja sagara dam in Mysore. Recognizing his talent and services, the then british government sent him to Aden in 1906-1907 to study the water supply and drainage system.

Floods in Hyderabad:
 At that time, the biggest floods occurred in Bhagyanagar. Around 50 thousand people were killed. 17 cm of rain fell at once and many bridges collapsed. Then the seventh Nizam Mir Usman ali Khan was ruling Bhagyanagar. He decided to use the services of Mokshagundam. Then Visvesvaraya's services to create the drainage system along with the flood protection system are indescribable. It was due to his advice that today's Gandipet and Himayat Sagar twin reservoirs were constructed. Due to these, the flood coming from Musi was blocked there. Moreover.. the water stored here is also satisfying the thirst of Hyderabadis.
 Due to the extraordinary talent he witnessed, the metropolis was averted from the threat of permanent floods. In 1955, Bharat Ratna served as Diwan for seven years. He served on the Board of Directors of Tata Steel from 1927-1955. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna Award in 1955 in recognition of his services to our nation as an engineer. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, who lived exactly one hundred years, passed away on 14th april 1962. Engineers of this generation celebrate his birthday as Engineers Day.
