Just ahead of Diwali, the irctc website and mobile app crashed on october 17.


The outage left lakhs of passengers unable to book Tatkal tickets, causing widespread frustration.


The disruption came at a crucial time when people were rushing to travel home for the festive season.


⛔ Bookings and Cancellations Temporarily Halted


A notification on the irctc website stated:

“All booking and cancellation services will remain unavailable for the next one hour.”

Both booking and cancellation functionalities were down during the outage.


🕘 Outage Hits During Tatkal Window


Tatkal bookings usually open at:


10:00 am for AC classes


11:00 am for sleeper class



The platform crashed around 10:40 am, right before Tatkal ticketing began.


Users reported being unable to log in, complete payments, or access the irctc Rail Connect app.


Many took to social media to voice their frustration and share error screenshots.


Passengers called it a “nightmare before the festival,” citing sluggish performance even before the crash.


📉 Impact on irctc Stock


As of 11:10 am, irctc shares were down 0.28% at Rs 717.05 on the BSE.


Despite the glitch:


1-week gain: 0.34%


2-week gain: 1.44%


However, longer-term performance shows:


6-month decline: 6.74%


1-year decline: 17.69%



Market capitalisation currently stands at approx. Rs 57,400 crore.

IRCTC officials stated that restoration efforts are underway.
