Indian movie chargeback scam has allegedly been exposed in Kansas City. The Kansas City-based B & B Theaters is looking into possible chargeback fraud. Chargeback claims of up to $250,000 were made in 2022. There are rumours that the fraud amount is significantly higher and not just in Kansas City cinemas.

Chargeback definition

when a consumer uses his credit card to purchase cinema tickets, watches the film, and then contacts the bank the next day to say that his credit card has been stolen, lost, or otherwise compromised. In response to the person's complaint, the credit card company requires that the shop repay the disputed amount and that the transactions conducted using the card be flagged as illegal.

The B & B Theaters have requested assistance from the Kansas City police department to look into the fraud after noticing a significant amount of chargeback claims. A thorough examination of these transactions showed that their Overland Park theatre in Kansas City has racked up over $150,000 in chargebacks this year, while other sites in Morrisville have racked up roughly $100,000.

According to reports, most of these tickets were purchased by groups of 7 or more. It has been reported that recent graduates and students living in Kansas City and other locations are responsible for these fraudulent activities. Of course indians are responsible for these chargeback frauds. The claimed participants are recent grads who have worked for consultancies in the aforementioned cities.

According to reports, the KCPD tracks every transaction, including the IP addresses from whence it originates, the credit card details used to purchase the tickets, and any chargebacks. If the accusations are confirmed, those implicated will be charged with felonies under financial fraud and cybercrime laws.

There are more allegations of similar occurrences occurring in Atlanta, where the theatre owner allegedly provided the ticket-picker an opportunity to withdraw the chargeback complaint in order to avoid sanctions after the person was seen on camera by the owner of the theatre.

'Email from theatres to customer who committed fraud:' reads the claimed email from the theatre owner to the person who selected the tickets.

The following ticket purchases were subject to a chargeback because, according to the credit card processor, you claimed that you had not authorised this charge. We have video of you at the cinema, and we also have a copy of one of the members of your group's driver's licence. See annex. Additionally, we have video of you taking hundreds of dollars from us in the past. As the movie distributor is considering exposing your information as someone who continues to swindle businesses, I've blind copied him on this email. I'm giving you the chance to make this right with the credit card company or come by the theatre and pay us what you owe before we report this information to the authorities. Finally, you are not permitted to enter our building ever again. We put a lot of effort into giving the public a fun experience, and you are stealing from a family-run company. It's quite upsetting that you'll destroy this for other people because if you keep acting like this, we won't be allowed to show these movies anymore. The driver's licence used to pick up tickets is shown below. The recipient's driver's licence is also included in the mail.

There have been several reports from various US cities, not just the B & B Theaters in Kansas City, and other theatre chains are further investigating this fraud.
