National Mathematics Day: History!!!

Srinivasa Ramanujan, who was born on december 22, 1887, is a renowned mathematician whose contributions to the discipline helped to solve a number of unresolved theorems. National Mathematics Day is observed on the day after his birthday.

To commemorate the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan's birth anniversary, National Mathematics Day is observed every year on december 22. He was born in 1887 to a lowly Iyengar Brahmin family in Erode, tamil Nadu.

History of National Mathematics Day

One of the best indian mathematicians of all time, Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematician. Ramanujan spent his brief but significant life working on theorems that looked unsolvable. His work on continued fractions, Riemann series, elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series, and functional equations of the zeta function are well recognised.

Origin of National Mathematics Day

The National Mathematics Year was observed in 2012 as a result of the previous prime minister Manmohan Singh's proclamation of december 22 as National Mathematics Day. Srinivasa Ramanujan was also depicted on the 2012 india stamp. The Ramanujan Math Park in Kuppam, Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, was inaugurated on this day in 2017.

To honour this day, numerous colleges and universities host tournaments, olympiads, and other educational events.
