Jake Schreier, director of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, discusses the relationship between Thunderbolts* and Avengers: Doomsday. As the Thunderbolts team's movie is scheduled to conclude Phase 5 for Marvel Studios before Phase 6 debuts this summer, 2025 is finally bringing the Multiverse Saga full circle, even though it has been sowing the seeds since Phase 4.  However, Marvel has already revealed that a number of the performers will return for Avengers: Doomsday next year, so the Thunderbolts* film is just the beginning for the ensemble.

Given that multiple cast members are expected to return for the major team-up feature in 2026, the Thunderbolts* director was asked in a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via CinemaBlend) if his film sets the stage for Avengers: Doomsday.  Schreier emphasized that there might be some groundwork in Thunderbolts* that logically flows into Avengers: Doomsday, without giving away too much. He said the following:

"There might be some stones, or pebbles [smiles]. I don’t know how you want to rate your rocks. Look, you know the character that we’re talking about, and you know that there’s a level of power involved there that could have an impact going forward. I’m not making Doomsday so I’m not privy to that."

What Jake Schreier's Sentry Comments Mean For Avengers: Doomsday
"There's at least one character who will be relevant in doctor Doom's big plot," the filmmaker said in the interview, which begs the question of which of the returning Thunderbolts* characters might play a part in Victor von Doom's grand scheme.  It wouldn't be shocking if Sentry is the one who would be connected to doctor Doom in the Avengers: Doomsday plot, even though Schreier doesn't specify who the individual is.  Given his immense power, it is certain that doctor Doom will eventually have his own army.

Despite the fact that the Thunderbolts* plot is about this team facing Sentry, it is clear that he will not be beaten for very long.  Sentry's continued existence following Thunderbolts* must have a narrative purpose, which is why Lewis Pullman was added to the Avengers: Doomsday cast.  Given that Sentry is set to become one of the most powerful figures in the MCU, it would be very reasonable for Victor to hire him at some point during Avengers: Doomsday.  That would provide the Avengers with yet another significant challenge.
