Mohanlal's latest film, Thudarum, was released yesterday in malayalam and today in Telugu, just two months after L2: Empuraan. Although there isn't much of a buzz here, the movie broke a record in kerala by selling over 4 lakh tickets on BookMyShow in a single day. Another highlight is when, after over twenty years, senior actress Shobana plays Mohanlal's wife.

Thudarum has been getting good reviews since its premiere, which has increased its word-of-mouth and box office receipts.  There are even others who daringly liken it to Drishyam.  Let's check to see if it really corresponds to that level.

Like Drishyam, Thudarum is a family thriller.  It centers around Benz, played by Mohanlal, who hires out his ancient black Ambassador car to drivers.  His wife, son, and daughter are his world, and family is everything to him. One day, Benz is forced to assist the police due to an unforeseen circumstance. He unintentionally becomes involved in a crime he did not commit. His life is completely upended by what appears to be a little kindness that turns into a nightmare.  Society labels him a criminal, and his loved ones are in danger.  The true tale emerges as Benz's desire for vengeance grows as the plot takes unexpected turns.

The main twists start after the first forty minutes, which are comparatively slow.  Honor killings are the subject of an intriguing screenplay by director Tarun Moorthy, which keeps the audience interested from the pre-interval point until the climax.  The ultimate disclosure is a Sukumar-style bombshell, even if the major twist seemed predictable halfway through.

Thudarum is a good film because of Jakes Bejoy's background music and the performers' excellent performances.  This is absolutely worth seeing if you enjoy crime thrillers with a malayalam flair.
