Creative Doubts Behind a Blockbuster
Aamir Khan recently admitted that he and director Rajkumar Hirani were “not totally happy” with PK, even though it became one of indian cinema’s biggest hits.
In a candid chat with Variety India, Aamir revealed that the film released in 2014 was not exactly the version they originally planned.
Despite record-breaking box office numbers, both felt creatively unsettled before its release.
Original Script Was Different
According to Aamir, Hirani had initially written a different second half for PK.
However, just before their film’s release, Oh My God! (OMG), starring akshay kumar and Paresh Rawal, hit theatres.
While the plots were distinct, both films explored themes around faith and religion.
This thematic similarity raised concerns for Hirani, prompting a major narrative rethink.
Why the Second Half Changed
Aamir clarified that PK had a completely different premise, centered on an alien questioning societal norms.
Still, Hirani insisted on altering the second half to avoid overlapping tones with OMG.
The team revised the screenplay under pressure, striving to present a unique cinematic voice.
Even after the changes, Aamir and Hirani felt it was “the best we could have done” at the time.
Box office Triumph
Despite their reservations, PK became the highest-grossing indian film upon release.
It later lost the record to Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and eventually Dangal.
The film’s success reaffirmed Aamir’s reputation as “Mr. Perfectionist.”
Recent & Upcoming Projects
Aamir was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, playing a basketball coach guiding neurodivergent children.
He also appeared in a cameo in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, starring Vir Das.
He is currently backing Ek Din, featuring junaid khan and Sai Pallavi.
Reports suggest a possible reunion with Hirani for a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, though the project remains on hold.
