What did india purchase from Russia?

The petrochemical sector relies heavily on naphtha. It is used to make aromatics and olefins. They are then used to make polymers, synthetic fibers, synthetic resins, and a variety of chemicals. The european union (EU) outright prohibited oil products originating from russia in february 2023.  Following this, nations in Asia and the Middle east began purchasing naphtha from Russia.

How much naphtha was bought from Russia?

In june, 250,000 tonnes of naphtha were shipped from Russian ports to india, according to Reuters.  Compared to May, this was 5% lower.  However, india purchased about 1.4 million tons of naphtha from russia in the first half of 2025.  According to shipping data, Russian naphtha reached western indian ports like Mundra, Hazira, and Sikka.  Previously, india purchased naphtha from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). But in order to save money, it is now purchasing cheaper naphtha from Russia.

Meanwhile, 234,000 tons of naphtha were shipped from russia to taiwan last month, per LSEG data.  In May, this was twice as much. taiwan purchased 12.7 lakh tonnes of naphtha from russia between january and June.  Major purchasers of Russian naphtha in june included China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Turkey.

What is the situation in other countries?

According to ship-tracking statistics, no Russian cargo reached Fujairah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in June. russia shipped 80,000 tons of naphtha to the United Arab Emirates in May. Through the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, ships take their route to Asia with approximately 300,000 tonnes of Russian naphtha. In May, 150,000 tonnes of naphtha were shipped to Asia. The Houthis party in yemen has been threatening to attack; therefore, traders have been staying away from the red Sea since december 2023.  As a result, Russian oil products are being transported throughout Africa.
