On Saturday, kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the number of calls received at the 'Mitra 181' women's hotline has surpassed two lakh, and urged more people to use the service when they are in trouble. In a facebook post, he stated that 90,000 callers were served out of the total number of calls received at the emergency helpline.
Mitra 181 is an initiative that began in 2017 with the goal of ensuring the safety and well-being of women in Kerala. The emergency helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The kerala State Women's Development Corporation (KSWDC), a public sector initiative under the women and Child Development Ministry, is in charge of the project.
The chief minister has announced the creation of a new hotline for those who require police, ambulance, hospital, or legal assistance. She said that all of the people working in the control room are women with the law and social work degrees. The programme is given in collaboration with several departments to assist sexual assault victims.
The authorised individuals who answer the calls would listen to each caller's issues and follow up until an appropriate solution is found and justice is served, he added.
Domestic harassment accounted for 20,000 of the 60,000 calls that were properly handled and solutions found, he added. Concerned officials are attempting to offer the greatest amount of assistance to women and children seeking assistance in 'Mitra.' Major hospitals, police stations, and ambulance services are also accessible instantly by phoning the toll-free number 181.
