Zakir Hussain was born on march 9, 1951, in Mumbai. He is the son of tabla maestro Ustad alla Rakha. Zakir inherited the skill of playing tabla from his father. He learned to play the instrument with full dedication in childhood. At the age of just three, he had learned to play the pakhawaj. This art was taught to him by his father. He did his first concert in America only at the age of 11. After this, in the year 1973, he launched his first album 'Living in the Material World'.
At a very young age, Zakir had strengthened his hold on the tabla. After this, he started the journey of playing Tabla at the age of 11-12. He used to travel from place to place for his concerts. Considering his tabla as Saraswati, he left no stone unturned in its protection and worship. Zakir had told that when he used to travel, he did not have enough money to travel in a reserved coach. Because of this, he used to climb into the crowded coach of the train.
Ustad did not have a reserved seat to sit on the train, so he used to sit down by spreading newspapers. No one's foot or shoe should touch the tabla, so he used to keep it in his lap. As long as his journey continued, he used to carry the tabla in his lap like a child. He could not even visit his family due to lack of money during the Sangeet Yatra. After constant struggles, when his financial condition improved, he took time off from his music tour to visit his family.
After crossing all the difficulties, he made a place in the hearts of people all over the world. Whenever he plays tabla, people lose their senses and enjoy the journey of a new world.
