Numerous real-life individuals and occasions have been adapted into motion pictures. hollywood doesn't seem to be slowing down when it comes to telling stories about high-profile cases, from biopics and documentaries to making movies about the most prominent serial killers and criminals in the world. The most notorious person currently under investigation is Jason Derek Brown, a charming con artist who was placed on the FBI's list of ten most wanted individuals back in 2007. The purpose of writer-director Matthew Gentile's film American Murderer is to depict the craziness and turmoil of the circumstances that led to his notoriety. Sadly, in spite of tom Pelphrey's great performance, the movie lacks any sense of style, depth, or suspense.

The narrative centres on genuine conman Jason Derek Brown (Pelphrey). Jason has a magnetic personality, a passion for life, and a built-in desire to party nonstop. After being raised in a home where his father honed the art of the con, Brown quickly adopts that way of life for himself to enjoy a luxury lifestyle free from concerns. Unfortunately for Brown, as his money starts to run low and his past comes back to haunt him, he is forced to start up some unscrupulous business ventures. Now that he is forced to devise his most complex plan yet to make up for his losses, Brown makes a choice that he cannot undo. In the process, Jason rises to the top ten most implausible and elusive wanted list of the FBI.

The craziness that results when money, wealth, and bad judgement are at the core of one's wants and qualities is captured in Gentile's script. That requires Brown to concentrate on making money rapidly, regardless of how he does it or who he harms in the process. Beyond brief flashbacks that described Brown's early life and upbringing, viewers are sadly unable to have a proper understanding of how he got to be the deceitful artist that he was. But when one looks into the real Jason Derek Brown's life, it's more interesting than anything shown in the movie, making it more harder to find any motivation to stay watching this dull movie.

Although American Murderer may be appealing on paper, it is a bland and careless rendition of the true story of one of America's most intriguing murderers. It's not just unsatisfactory from a narrative perspective; the cast is wasted, making it much more difficult to recommend. Along with Pelphrey, the presence of actors like Ryan Phillippe, Idina Menzel, Jacki Weaver, and Moises Arias in a single movie ought to be reason enough for anyone to rush to the theatre. However, they are all so underused in a script that makes terrible plot decisions, shoddy editing choices, and glaring character handling errors that it doesn't even attempt to cover up its deficiencies.
