Musical maestro A.R. rahman has landed in felony trouble. In line with reports, the 58-year-old is going through copyright infringement for his musical work in Mani Ratnam's directorial, ponniyin selvan 2. On Friday, the delhi High court surpassed an interim order in opposition to the Oscar-winning composer and madras Talkies, the manufacturing residence that bankrolled the film, ordering them to pay Rs 2 crore as compensation to the accusing party.
The case turned into a filing by Ustad Fayyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, a Padma Shri-winning classical musician, who moved the court in 2023 that the song Veera raja Veera from the movie became a copy of shiva Stuti, a composition by his father, Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar, and uncle, Zahiruddin Dagar.
He sought a permanent injunction against the defendants, along with acknowledgement of moral rights. Consistent with Bar and Bench, Justice Prathiba M. Singh has mentioned that Veera raja Veera isn't simply inspired by using shiva Stuti but is, however, an immediate copy of the song with some lyrical modifications.
The courtroom has ordered rahman to deposit the compensation immediately to the Registrar's office in the delhi High Court.
In a 2023 interview with Scroll, Dagar stated, "I'm a small man; however, my tune is huge. In this city, everybody is aware that we do not run after celebrities or money. We keep a low profile. However, the acknowledgement of every other artist's work is important. In our track, when we call the greats, we touch our ears. That is an acknowledgement of their knowledge, understanding, and attempt that we're freely dipping into."
