Prem dhawan was born on 13 june 1923 in Ambala, which is currently in the state of Haryana, India. His father was the jail superintendent of the british government. He completed his college studies in Lahore. During college, he was associated with the Communist party of India. prem Dhawan started his career in 1946 in Lahore as an assistant to composer Khwaja Khurshid Anwar in Khwaja ahmed Abbas's film 'Aaj Aur Kal'.
After this, prem Dhawan moved to mumbai to join the 'Indian People's theater Association'. After joining the indian People's theater Association, he learned music from the famous musician ravi Shankar.
Debut with 'Dharti Ke Lal'

Apart from being a lyricist and composer, prem Dhawan also acted in two films. He acted in 'Lajawab' (1950) and 'Ghoonj Uthi Shehnai' (1959). Not only this, prem also worked as a choreographer for seven films. However, he did not get much success in this. He worked as a choreographer in films like 'Waqt', 'Dhool Ka Phool', 'Do Phool', 'Sahara', and 'Naya Daur'.
Honored with these awards
In the year 1970, the government of india honored prem Dhawan with the 'Padma Shri'. He won the National Film Award for Best Lyricist for the film 'Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar' in 1971. By the 80s, the shine of his career started to fade. He died on 7 May 2001 at the age of 77.
