Govt could set guidelines for sharing non-personal data...


An official who spoke on the record under the condition of anonymity suggested that the regulations might charge for the distribution of anonymized data sets and permit free government access in order to improve the effectiveness of the government's welfare programmes.

The goal, he explained, is to allow the free movement of anonymized data sets.

Any data that conceals a person's identify is considered non-personal data. The ministry of electronics and IT may put restrictions on the sharing of such data. The official stated that "some aspects of sharing of such data will be limited so that it can only be used for particular purposes for which it has been shared."

The government has so far considered a number of non-personal data governance strategies. The joint parliamentary committee was created to review the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019, which was established in the same year to examine the current provisions and propose changes, recommended including non-personal data in the data protection law.
