The capital region which includes parts of Guntur and Krishna districts is all set to turn into a concrete jungle with reports that AP's proposal for de-notifying the reserve forests might be ratified by the Centre. This is seen as a big blow to environment in the proposed capital region.

The state government seems to have suggested the de-notification of 33,000 hectares from the total 49,000-odd ha of reserve forest land in Krishna district as well as 12,000 ha in Guntur district. In addition,
it is also moving to de-notify another 6,700 hectares in West Godavari district.

Currently, the forest cover in Krishna district is around 7.3 per cent and this may fall down to three per cent in case the Centre allows AP government to go ahead fully with its plans. According to section 94 (4) of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, Centre can facilitate creation of a new capital by denotifying the degraded forests.

But this expected to counter the spirit of the AP State Reorganisation Act which actually favours denotification process of only degraded forests. TDP government is getting ready for this move so that it can quickly build an industrial corridor from Chennai to Vizag, which would cover the entire capital region.
