A mixed marriage certificate cannot be given for a convert, according to the chennai High Court, because the benefits could be abused. Balraj, a Christian Adithravidar from Mettur in the salem district, married Amutha, an Arundhatiyar woman. He got a caste certificate as a backward class person and applied for a certificate declaring that he understood mixed marriages because he was a Christian.

The application was refused by the governor of Mettur, who stated that a mixed marriage certificate could not be provided to a convert. Balraj's lawsuit against this was previously scheduled for hearing before Judge SM Subramaniam. "The Governor's rejection of the petitioner's request was justified," the government maintained, "since the government of 1997 could not issue a mixed marriage certificate to a convert."

Following this, the judge determined that a convert could not receive a mixed marriage certificate. It's possible that the advantages of doing so will be abused. Furthermore, changing one's faith has no effect on one's caste. A mixed marriage certificate is not available to couples from the same caste or social status. Offers for mixed marriages should only be made to individuals who are eligible. He dismissed the case by saying, "Should never be misused."
