However, instead of removing it completely, the Center has decided to limit it to some disturbed areas.

assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that I wholeheartedly welcome PM Modi's decision to withdraw AFSPA from all areas of assam except 9 districts and one sub-division. I also express my deepest gratitude to home minister Shah for this bold decision. Now about 60 percent area of the state will be free from the purview of AFSPA.
He said, AFSPA has been in force since 1990 and this step marks the beginning of a new chapter in the future of Assam. This is a testament to the significant improvement in law and order in the state. With the predominance of peace, the North east is now on a new path of development.
