The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a clarification about the new LPG electronic Know Your customer (eKYC) requirements in India, especially regarding Aadhaar‑based biometric authentication. This update comes amid confusion after reports that all LPG users must complete Aadhaar verification to continue receiving gas and subsidies.

🔍 What the government Clarified

  • The government reiterated that Aadhaar‑based biometric eKYC is required only for LPG consumers who have not yet completed eKYC.
  • Consumers who already have a completed eKYC do not need to undergo Aadhaar biometric verification again.
  • The announcement is not a new directive but part of ongoing efforts to ensure pending eKYC cases are completed so consumers continue to receive LPG services and subsidies.

This clarification is important because many LPG users were worried that every consumer must redo Aadhaar verification, even if they had already completed the process earlier.

📌 Who Needs Aadhaar eKYC?

 Required: Consumers with Incomplete eKYC

  • If an LPG connection does not have Aadhaar‑based KYC completed yet, the consumer must undergo biometric authentication.
  • This applies to users of major oil marketing companies (OMCs) like Indian oil (Indane), Bharat Petroleum (BharatGas), and Hindustan Petroleum (HP Gas).

Not Required: Consumers with Completed eKYC

  • Households that have already completed LPG eKYC — including Aadhaar authentication in the past — do not need to repeat it.
  • Their LPG refill and subsidy delivery continue normally without additional Aadhaar authentication.

📌 Special Case: PMUY Benefits

  • For beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), Aadhaar eKYC may be required at the start of each financial year before the first refill to continue receiving subsidy benefits.

📱 How LPG eKYC with Aadhaar Works

If you do need to complete Aadhaar eKYC, here’s the typical process:

Use your LPG company’s official mobile app (like IndianOil One, Hello BPCL or HP Pay).

Select the Aadhaar eKYC / biometric Authentication option.

Complete biometric verification or face authentication using the Aadhaar FaceRD app.

Submission is generally reviewed and approved within 24‑48 hours.
Consumers can complete this from home without visiting a gas agency physically.

🛑 What Happens If You Don’t Complete Pending eKYC

If eKYC is still pending for your LPG connection and you don’t complete Aadhaar verification:

  • LPG cylinder refill delivery may be disrupted.
  • Subsidies (such as DBT for PMUY beneficiaries) may be suspended until verification is done.

This is why the government has been urging pending users to complete eKYC soon.

🧠 Why This Matters

The LPG eKYC requirements — and the clarification that Aadhaar verification is not mandatory for everyone — matter because:

  • LPG is an essential household fuel used by millions of indian families.
  • Rules around Aadhaar and eKYC directly affect access to refills and government subsidies.
  • The clarification helps reduce confusion and ensures that users who already completed eKYC are not unnecessarily asked to repeat it.

It also reflects the government’s aim to clean up LPG databases and prevent fraud or duplicate connections, using Aadhaar as a verification tool where needed.

📌 Quick Summary

  • 🔹 Aadhaar eKYC is essential only for consumers who haven’t finished it yet.
  • 🔹 If you’ve already completed eKYC earlier, Aadhaar verification is not mandatory again.
  • 🔹 Failure to complete pending eKYC can disrupt LPG refills and subsidies.
  • 🔹 You can complete eKYC online via official LPG company apps without visiting a distributor.
