India-Japan talks: Can Modi and Kishida have the same opinion on Russia-China?

India and japan have similar security and strategic concerns but both deal with them in different ways.

Prime minister Modi and Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida discussed the relationship between the two countries at the 14th India-Japan Annual Summit in delhi on Saturday, march 19. This was the first summit after the summit talks held in japan in the year 2018. At the same time, this is Kishida's first visit to delhi as prime minister after becoming the Japanese prime minister in october 2021. This summit has taken place when both the countries are still trying to understand the ukraine war and the global situation arising out of it.

The scale of the India-Japan friendship is large and both support each other in many things both are also concerned about china, the Kovid-19 epidemic, and climate change. These issues have also been given a place in the joint declaration of 3,300 words. While the talks have been extensive, one of the main goals of the visit was to strengthen the foundation of prime minister Kishida's relationship with indian prime minister Modi. At the same time, we had to move forward more strongly on those things which have been agreed upon earlier.

The two countries also showed different stances on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In his meeting on Saturday, Japanese prime minister Kishida stressed that Russia's action on ukraine should not be "forgiven". In the press release issued after the meeting,

Even though prime minister Kishida emphasized Russia's aggression in his statement, prime minister Modi showed more caution. Further strengthening of the India-Japan friendship is necessary not only for both the countries but also for the Indo-Pacific region. This will promote peace, prosperity, and stability in the world.

Even though nothing was said directly about russia or china in the statements, if you look closely, the indications are understandable. In this gesture, Russia-Ukraine relations, China's actions in Galvan, Ladakh, and disputes in the South china Ocean have been mentioned. One of the conclusions is that beijing is a big factor for both delhi and tokyo at the moment.

In the recent virtual talks of Baiden-Xi jinping regarding ukraine, nothing special has come out, which points to the weakening of the strings of Sino-US relations. If the Moscow-Beijing partnership turns against the US-West axis, then the situation will become very complicated for countries like India, and Japan.
