
punjab governor banwarilal purohit on thursday asked the state government to initiate action against two
expensive residential projects owned by aam aadmi party MLA Kulwant Singh for violating
environmental laws. In a letter to chief minister Bhagwant Mann, Purohit sought an action taken report
from the AAP government, saying the Super Mega Mixed Use Integrated Industrial Park and Galaxy
Heights projects in Sectors 82-83 and 66A of Mohali by Janata Land Promoters Limited are violating
environmental norms. are being made in violation.
‘It is necessary to take cognizance of the crime’
governor banwarilal purohit said that the violation of environmental laws has been highlighted by the
Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He shared the ministry's communication
which said, “The project was subject to violations from december 16, 2015 (date of granting environment
clearance) to january 10, 2017 (eco-sensitive zone limit notification). Accordingly, it is necessary to take
cognizance of the offense under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The governor advised that civic
authorities and the punjab Pollution Control Board may be asked to take strict action against violators of
wildlife norms involved in illegal construction.
Kulwant Singh had assets worth Rs 139 crore in 2014
In response to clarifications sought by the State regarding construction by Janata Land Promoters Limited,
the Union Environment Ministry has observed that the proposed project site is located at a distance of
13.06 km from the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary and 8.4 km from the boundary of the Bird Sanctuary in
Chandigarh. Realtor and former mayor Kulwant Singh, who was AAP's candidate from Mohali Urban in
2022, was the richest among all those contesting punjab elections from the district with assets worth Rs
250 crore. When Kulwant Singh contested the lok sabha elections from Fatehgarh Sahib on Akali Dal
ticket in 2014, his declared assets were Rs 139 crore.
