TN Seeks Stamp Honouring ‘Perum Pidugu’ Mutharayar
Request to the Central Government
The tamil Nadu government has appealed to the central government to issue a commemorative postage stamp honouring tamil king ‘Perum Pidugu’ Mutharayar.
The proposal was formally submitted by S. V. Meyyanathan, tamil Nadu’s backward classes Welfare Minister.
He addressed the request to Union minister Kiren Rijiju, highlighting the cultural importance of the initiative.
The state believes the stamp will help preserve and promote the legacy of tamil history, governance, and cultural values.
Purpose and Significance of the Stamp
The issuance of the stamp is seen as a step to pass historical knowledge to future generations.
According to the state, it will showcase the achievements of the celebrated tamil ruler.
Meyyanathan emphasized that honouring Mutharayar will foster emotional unity between tamil Nadu and the rest of India.

Who Was ‘Perum Pidugu’ Mutharayar?
He was a prominent 8th-century ruler belonging to the Mutharayar dynasty.
Known for being a just king, skilled administrator, courageous warrior, and a patron of arts and agriculture.
He ruled over regions around Tiruchirapalli.
Inscriptions found in Senthalai, Northalai, and the northern banks of the kaveri river provide evidence of his reign.
Contributions to Agriculture and Irrigation
Mutharayar initiated significant irrigation projects, transforming the region into a fertile “granary.”
His title “Perum Pidugu”, meaning “Great Thunder,” reflects the respect and admiration he earned from the people.
Cultural Legacy in Modern Times
His memory continues through folk songs, cultural traditions, and temple festivals in districts like Tiruchirapalli, Pudukottai, and Thanjavur.
These living traditions highlight his lasting influence on tamil culture.
