Historic Transition:
The indian government has shifted the email system for around 1.2 million central government employees from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to Zoho Mail, a platform developed by tamil Nadu-based Zoho Corporation. This marks one of the biggest wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital transformation initiatives in India’s administrative ecosystem.
Seven-Year contract with Zoho:
Under a seven-year agreement, Zoho will manage the government’s email infrastructure. Despite the operational change, all government email addresses will continue using the nic.in and gov.in domains to maintain continuity and trust.
Promotion of Indigenous Technology:
The move aligns with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative. On october 3, the Ministry of education issued an order directing all departments to adopt the Zoho Suite—a step aimed at reducing dependence on foreign technologies and strengthening India’s local tech ecosystem.
Focus on Data Security and Privacy:
To ensure top-level cybersecurity, the government consulted NIC and CERT-In, and regular security audits through software Quality Systems (SQS) will continue. Former IAS officer K.B.S. Sidhu welcomed the decision, emphasizing the need for end-to-end encryption and independent audits to make systems completely leak-proof.
Zoho’s Trust-Based Approach:
Zoho’s founder Sridhar Vembu highlighted that the company’s business model centers around user trust and data privacy. He assured that user data will never be used for marketing and that Zoho is implementing end-to-end encryption across its suite of applications.
Cybersecurity Lessons from AIIMS Attack:
The decision follows the AIIMS delhi cyberattack in november 2022, which exposed vulnerabilities in government systems. After a review, the wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital india Corporation invited bids for secure cloud services, leading to Zoho’s selection as a reliable and secure provider.
