If you are employed and have not yet filed Income Tax Return (ITR), then there is good news for you. The central government has extended the last date for filing income tax return by 45 more days. Now taxpayers without audit can file ITR till 15 september 2025. Earlier this date was 31 July 2025.

Who got the benefit?

This relief is especially for those employed people who usually start filing ITR only after 15 June, because by then they get Form 16 from their employer. In such a situation, they had less time to file ITR. With this extension, they will now get full time.

No change for those whose account is audited

It is worth noting that no date has been changed for those taxpayers whose account comes under the purview of audit. Such taxpayers will have to file their tax audit report by 30 september 2025 and ITR by 31 october 2025.

Why was there a delay in the ITR filing process this year?

The ITR filing process starts from 1 april every year. But this year the government delayed the ITR forms and their online facilities by about a month. Some structural and technical changes have been made in the forms, which took time to prepare the system. For this reason, the government has extended the date.

Extension was also given due to delay in TDS credit

The government said that TDS statements will be filed by 31 May 2025 and their credit will be visible in early June. In such a situation, without an extension, taxpayers do not have the right time to file ITR. That is why a new deadline of 15 september 2025 has been given.

Date for late filing or correction of mistake also fixed

If you miss the last date of 15 september 2025, then you can file belated ITR till 31 december 2025. But a penalty of up to Rs 5,000 can be levied on this. Apart from this, if you have already filed ITR and now have to make any correction in it, then revised ITR can also be filed till 31 december 2025. If you need more time, then you can file updated ITR (ITR-U) till 31 march 2026, but this option comes with some conditions.
