Big relief is coming for millions of LPG consumers in India. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is finalizing an LPG Interoperability and Portability Framework that will allow customers to change their gas provider without applying for a new connection.
This system will work much like mobile number portability (MNP), where you can keep your number but change your service provider.
🚚 Why This Move?
Currently, once you take a gas connection with Indane, Bharat Gas, or hp Gas, you are tied to that distributor. If the distributor delays delivery or provides poor service, the consumer has no option but to tolerate it.
The new framework will bring flexibility, competition, and faster service, directly benefiting the customer.
🔑 How LPG Portability Will Work
Single Database of Consumers – All gas companies will be linked under one national database.
Choose Your Provider – If you are unhappy with service, you can switch to another LPG company while retaining the same consumer ID.
No New Documents Needed – Aadhaar and KYC will already be verified, so customers won’t need to submit paperwork again.
No Cylinder Exchange Hassle – You won’t have to surrender your old cylinder or regulator; interoperability will ensure same equipment works across providers.
Digital Porting Process – Switching will be as easy as applying online or through a mobile app.
Benefits for Consumers
Faster Delivery: Competition among providers will push distributors to deliver on time.
Better customer Service: Consumers will no longer be stuck with inefficient suppliers.
Transparency: All transactions will be digitally recorded, reducing chances of malpractice.
Freedom of Choice: Just like telecom portability, LPG users will have the power to choose.
📅 When Will It Start?
According to reports, PNGRB is in the final stages of drafting the framework, and rollout is expected in phases starting 2026. Initially, portability may be launched in metros and tier-1 cities, before expanding nationwide.
📌 Final Word
With LPG portability, consumers will finally get the right to choose their gas provider, ensuring timely delivery, better service, and hassle-free switching. This marks a big step toward consumer empowerment in India’s energy sector.
