Premier Padmini: After a long journey of 60 years, these black and yellow taxis will no longer be seen on the roads from tomorrow.

 And now finally from tomorrow, these taxis will disappear from the streets of Mumbai. The last "Premier Padmini" was registered as a black and yellow taxi on october 29, 2003, a transport department official said. The age limit for cab driving in the city is 20 years.Prabhadevi resident Abdul Karim Karsekar, who owns Mumbai's last registered Premier padmini Taxi (MH-01-JA-2556), said, "This is Mumbai's pride and our life." Just weeks after the last iconic diesel-powered double-decker bus went out of service, the 'Kali-Pili' has reached the end of the road, bringing immense grief to transport enthusiasts. Some people want at least one Premier padmini to be preserved on the road or in a museum.

A few years ago, the mumbai Taximen's Union had petitioned the government to preserve at least one Kali-Pili, but with no success. Its General Secretary AL Quadros recalled that Premier Padmini's journey as a taxi began in 1964 with the powerful 1200-cc car Fiat-1100 Delight. It was smaller than the "big taxis" such as the Plymouth, Landmaster, Dodge, and Fiat 1100, which the locals called the 'Dukkar Fiat'.

In the 1970s, the model was rebranded as the Premier President and later the Premier Padmini. He said its production stopped in 2001, but the few that remained unregistered got taxi permits in 2003, and they too would be phased out.
