The State Legislative assembly will gather on saturday to allow freshly elected MLAs to take their oaths as members of the House, even though the Speaker election is set for december 14.

According to sources, nominations for the Speaker's election will be accepted on december 13. The congress has proclaimed Vikarabad legislator G. prasad Kumar's nomination, but the main Opposition BRS has not stated its position on whether it would follow the typical procedure of choosing a governing party nominee unchallenged or pitch for an election.

If BRS fields a candidate, congress has the necessary 64 votes and a cpi member to win the Speaker election. Even with the assistance of the bjp and the MIM, the BRS cannot win.

Chief minister A. revanth Reddy, a third-term legislator, will sit in the treasury benches for the first time, as leader of the House. He served in the assembly as a telugu Desam member from 2009 to 2014 and again from 2014 to 2018. He was defeated in the 2018 assembly elections.

Former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao is unlikely to attend the assembly session since he is undergoing hip replacement surgery at a private facility.

Meanwhile, the selection of the BRSLP leader on saturday has political significance because the party has 39 MLAs and the BRSLP leader would be appointed as cabinet rank leader of opposition (LoP). It has to be seen if Chandrashekar Rao will become the BRSLP leader or suggest K.T. Rama Rao, T. Harish Rao, or someone from his family, as he did in 2004 and 2009 when he chose G. Vijaya Rama Rao and Etala Rajendar.

Governor tamilisai soundararajan has selected six-time mla Akbaruddin Owaisi of the All india Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen as protem speaker, and he will take the oath in the morning at raj Bhavan.
