In a significant reorganization of the cabinet, prime minister Mark Carney swore in Canadian politician Anita anand as the country's new foreign minister.

Melanie Joly, who was promoted to the position of minister of Industry, has been replaced by anand, who is of indian descent and has held positions such as Canada's Defence Minister. As she has done in past cabinet appointments, the 58-year-old lawmaker, a senior member of Canada's Liberal Party, took the oath of office with her hand on the Hindu text Bhagavad Gita.

Prime minister Carney is reassembling his freshly elected Liberal cabinet, which consists of 28 members, with the reshuffle.  In an effort to demonstrate a new beginning from the Justin Trudeau era, he also appointed secretaries of state.  Given that women make up about half of the government, the cabinet strikes a balance between diversity and experience.  According to Mr. Carney, the cabinet was selected to "deliver the change Canadians want and need," notwithstanding the strained relationship between the US and Canada.

"I am honored to be named Canada's minister of Foreign Affairs," Ms. anand wrote on X after taking the oath of office.  In order to create a more secure and equitable world and provide for Canadians, I am eager to collaborate with prime minister Mark Carney and our team.

After winning the federal election in 2025, Ms. anand is the representative for Oakville east riding in the house of Commons.  From 2019 until 2025, she served as the representative for Oakville in the house of Commons. She held several important positions, including President of the Treasury Board, minister of Public services and Procurement, and minister of National Defense, Transport, and Internal Trade.
