While the world is busy with economic growth and wealth creation, some small countries are struggling to maintain their existence. Tuvalu, one of the smallest countries in the Pacific Ocean, is currently attracting the world's attention. Because scientists are warning that it is sinking into the sea. The country of Tuvalu is usually only 2 meters above sea level. Due to the effects of global warming, the sea level is constantly rising. According to nasa estimates, there is a risk of sea level rising by another 15 centimeters. This is polluting freshwater resources, and seawater is seeping into the ground. The livelihoods of the people, including fish and coconut plantations, are also being severely affected.
In view of this critical situation, the country of Tuvalu has signed an agreement with its neighbor, Australia, called the Falepili Union Treaty. According to this agreement, the people of Tuvalu will be provided with education, medical care, and job opportunities in Australia. Already, 8,750 Tuvaluans have migrated to Australia. They have been granted visas through a lottery system. According to environmentalists, the main reasons for this plight are global warming, chaotic urbanization, and misuse of natural resources. The sea level is rising due to the rapid melting of icebergs. If this situation continues, countries like Bangladesh, the Maldives, and fiji are also in danger of being submerged in the sea along with Tuvalu.
The warning that the country of Tuvalu is giving to the world is very clear. "There is still time, take care of the environment, control global warming." Otherwise, more countries are at risk of disappearing from the world map in the future. This tragic event, not of a village, not a district, but a country disappearing into the sea, should make each of us think. Environmental protection is not just about making movements; it is imperative to bring about changes in our lifestyle. We must wake up from the Tuvalu experience; it is very necessary for our future.
